A book made by children participating in a workshop organised by Bibliotecas Móviles exploring the question “What is a book?”. Can a book be without letters? Can a book be written on a wall, on the floor? Can a book be a glass to drink from?

Today we had the great pleasure to meet Carlos to hear more about his project Bibliotecas Móviles which is, according to himself, “28 libraries in one”. His mobile library is on a constant tour visiting 28 communities in Oaxaca encouraging people to enter the world of literature. The belief is that this initiative will inspire people in the villages to discover the need for having a library in their own community. Besides lending books, Carlos also organises workshops for children to play with letters and words and fill them with their own meanings. “The letter is an empty glass” for us to fill.

HOLA REJMYRE! HOLA OAXACA! HOLA STOCKHOLM! is a project organised by Raketa happening in Stockholm and Rejmyre (Sweden), and Oaxaca (Mexico). The Rejmyre part is supported by Arvsfonden.
The project will connect children and adults from two different yet similar places on earth: Reijmyre, Sweden and Zegache, Oaxaca, Mexico. Corresponding workshops will be held in both places and the crucial questions raised throughout the workshops are: How can we live together? What stories do we want to pass on?
Starting from common places; the street, woods, parking lots, football fields, churches – we will probe how to make our voice heard, how to take part of society and affect the future. There will be on-going discussion on our society: how it is perceived today and what we want to be in the future – in light of a place’s history and narratives.
Together with the workshop participants, we will launch a series of questions based from a local perspective – Zegache/ Reijmyre – which are also part of the global conversation on how we want our world should look like. we will present knitted graffiti and glass poetry as the means to combine contemporary and traditional expression. It is also an issue of interconnecting different demographics, graffiti being an expression of the young and urban, while knitting and crocheting is associated with an older rural generation.
The knowledge and skills required for craft production in Reijmyre and Zegache will be presented to the younger generation in an unexpected ways. Together with the people in Reijmyre and Zegache we will read the site – using words, sentences, questions and secret messages.

Hola Rejmyre! Hola Oaxaca! Hola Stockholm! is a part of the overall project Euroaxacan Inititative of Transformative Cultures (EITC) which is an European-Mexican collaboration running between 2011 and 2013. The overall aim is to function as a catalyst of socio-economic transformations induced by transcultural production.
